Rebel Without a Cause Takes Over The Alex!

See the immortal James Dean on the big screen as the original rebellious teen!

With his slicked-back hair, pouting red lips and slouching in a white T-shirt and blue jeans, Dean created one of cinema’s iconic images as the high school outsider, troubled and alone.

Dean bonds with two classmates, Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo, to battle school bullies in a switchblade knife fight and a thrilling game of “chicken” racing cars towards a seaside cliff.

Action and teenage angst abound in this movie classic. 1955/Warner Bros.

Jeffrey Kahane, conductorTimothy Andres, pianoTimothy Andres Sound Investment commission (world premiere)Mozart/Andres Mozart “Coronation” Concerto re-composition for piano and orchestra (West Coast premiere)Mozart Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K. 550

In 1913 Paris, the premiere of Stravinsky’s seminal The Rite of Spring caused an audience riot. The following year, after the work’s first concert-only performance, cheering Parisians carried Stravinsky through the streets. How will Los Angeles react to the Sound Investment commission by young Brooklyn-based composer Timothy Andres in March 2012? Come and find out! “Andres is unquestionably a distinctive talent, with a fine teasing ear for texture and harmony,” declares The Guardian. An accomplished pianist, Andres also joins LACO for “a new completion of the “Coronation” Concerto, in which he has replaced entirely Mozart’s sketches for the left-hand part. “I approached the piece…as a sprawling playground for pianistic invention and virtuosity, taking cues from the composer-pianist tradition Mozart helped crystallize.”

Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 brings this scintillating concert to a close–a reminder that the ground-breaking works of today are the beloved masterpieces of tomorrow.

Like father, like son? The celebration of Jeffrey Kahane’s 15th anniversary as LACO music director concludes with particular poignancy. Father and son Jeffrey and Gabriel Kahane appear on stage together as conductor and composer/soloist for the first time. Inspired by the diaries of his grandmother, Gabriel’s new work, a LACO co-commission with American Composers Orchestra, chronicles the family’s departure from 1939 Germany and the journey that brought them via Cuba to Los Angeles. Gabriel explains that the work explores his grandmother’s relationship to Judaism and her gradual embrace of American identity as well as an examination of his own identity as an American Jew.

Expanding on the concert’s themes of adaptation and relocation is one of Charles Ives’ most popular works, Three Places in New England, and Haydn’s “London” Symphony with its exuberant finale.
